About the Event

The Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie (GDPL) is a legendary event in Québec that brings together thousands of cyclists, runners, and schoolchildren around healthy lifestyle habits. Created in 2009 by ultra-athlete Pierre Lavoie, the event combines performance, philanthropy, and citizen mobilization.

The Challenges

  • The 1000 km — The legendary challenge: 1000 km of cycling in 60 hours from Saguenay to Montréal, in teams of 4 cyclists in relay.
  • The Loop — A family cycling loop (50, 100, or 135 km) accessible to everyone.
  • The Great Walk — Family walks throughout Québec, open to the entire population.
  • The Energy Cubes Challenge — A program in elementary schools to encourage healthy lifestyle habits.

Associated Running Event

The Notos Ultra Trail is associated with the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie and offers distances of 8K, 21K, and 50K. To learn more about the 50K Notos, check out our guide to the first 50K in Québec.

Practical Notes

  • Registrations open several months in advance — spots fill up quickly.
  • Opportunity to participate as a runner, cyclist, walker, or volunteer.
  • Festive and welcoming atmosphere: it is primarily a family event.
  • Many teams register in support of school causes or young athletes.

The Impact of the GDPL

Beyond sports, the GDPL has become a powerful social movement around health. Every year, hundreds of thousands of children participate in the Energy Cubes Challenge. The event is regularly cited as one of the largest community sports events in Canada.
