About this trail

The Olmsted Trail

Located in the heart of Mount Royal Park, the Olmsted Trail is one of the most iconic walking routes in Montreal. Designed according to the vision of the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, this trail highlights the natural and soothing character of the mountain, in harmony with its relief and vegetation.

Winding and shaded, the trail traverses a dense forest composed of maples, oaks, and conifers, offering a complete immersion in nature, just minutes away from downtown. The intentionally non-linear layout invites you to slow your pace and appreciate the variations in the landscape, the play of light through the trees, and the surrounding calm.

Throughout the route, several viewpoints and natural openings allow for remarkable views of the city and the Saint Lawrence River. The trail is accessible to a wide audience: casual walkers, hikers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts all find a pleasant path, with moderate slopes and a surface mostly made of natural gravel.

The Olmsted Trail is particularly appreciated in the fall, when the mountain is adorned with vibrant colors, but it remains just as attractive in spring and summer. A true green lung of Montreal, it perfectly embodies the balance between nature, landscape heritage, and urban accessibility.
